No Country For Old Men (2007, Coen Brothers)

This is my first film review, and it is also for my film studies homework, so I hope you enjoy!

The Coen brothers’ No Country For Old Men is a film adapted from a Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name. It tells the story of a drug deal gone wrong in an isolated west Texas county, an ex-soldier (Josh Brolin), an old sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) and a psychotic hit man (Javier Bardem) in pursuit of a briefcase containing two million dollar. A movie made without a soundtrack, containing scenes of deep tension, harsh violence and some dark humour to create a slight crack in the tension. There is some amazing acting throughout this movie especially by Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones, which create deep responses by all audience members. The events throughout the movie are unpredictable and go against the conventions of the piece, the supposed protagonist (Josh Brolin) is killed around 20 minutes before the end which left me as an audience member looking for another character to cling onto, to finish the story. The ending itself is one that leaves you with loose ends for you to tie yourself. From my personal point of view I think that an ending like this is the right move for this film because it allows the spectator to feel more in touch with the movie as it makes them create an ending that they themselves see fit for each character.
