Drive (Winding Refn, 2011)

One of my favorite people's favorite films so I had to watch it and oh my gosh am I glad I did! Ryan Gosling plays the driver, the unnamed main character of this feature (I don't want to say protagonist as that suggests he's a good guy and it is way more complex than that). It starts quite simply, he drives for people that need to get away, as in from a crime scene, during the night and during the day switches it up between working at a garage and being a stunt driver for films. But it begins to get more complicated when he starts to notice his neighbor, portrayed by the very pretty Carey Mulligan, whom has a child with her husband whom in prison. And no spoilers but stuff gets serious and it gets rather Tarantino in this neo-noir arthouse feature.

The best thing about this film is the ending because it is so unpredictable, yet as it happens you realise that the ending you wanted so desperately to happen for 90 minutes was just never going to happen for real because lets face it this film apart from the almost Tarantino levels of blood is very real and gritty, very gritty for a film that really doesn't seem like that kind of film whatsoever. The second best thing about this film is the soundtrack because every single time I have gotten into my car since watching this film I have felt a desperate need for that soundtrack, so much so that I have actually ordered it already! In addition to this the cinematography, oh my giddy aunt they knew what they doing, it's just so perfectly done. It isn't symmetrical or perfectly framed in the center and that is why it is perfect. Because it isn't perfect, like the story isn't perfect. Our main characters life isn't perfect, it's just symbolism in camera shots and it is beautiful. 

Ok, I'll stop now. Basically this film is amazing, and you have to go and see it even if you don't like 'arthouse' films because it is just unexplainbly good! Five stars easy, I don't know how I could give it any less than that!

Inside Out (Docter, 2015)

I'm still getting over the fact that England got this movie like a whole month after the US but it's fine, it is fine. This film is another home run for Pixar, they seem to have gotten their mojo back after Monsters University. This film is quite grown up in a sense, it is very honest. Pixar haven't been afraid to get real with this film. And that would be why myself and the person I went to see it with cried.

'Inside Out' is about what is happening inside one girls head and there is alot happening. The story is pretty much attempting to explain what goes on in your head when you go through a big change and aren't really completely sure how to do deal with it. Maybe the best thing about this film is that it tells you that you don't always have to be happy, and that sometimes you need to be sad. I feel like that is a message that resonates with everyone, whether you're my age, or a small child or even the parent of that small child that didn't really want to see the film all that much in the first place. That is why this film has and will succeed because the message it is trying and manages to put across gets through to everyone.

I absolutely adore this film and I happily place it within that big jumble of Pixar films that I can't actually decide which one I like more. Four and a half magnificent little stars to Pete Docter's 'Inside Out', absolutely magnificent!

Disney Favourites: Animated Features

These will probably change by the time I have actually finished this list, and they will change shortly after that. This list that I write down now is in no way going to stay the same. And to be quite honest it would probably be easier for me to write my ten least favorite Disney Movies down for you.

Wish I Was Here (2014, Braff)

I have finally, FINALLY watched this film and oh my days was it worth the wait! I have managed to watch rather a few actually new films this year already and this may be my favorite so far beating 'Birdman' and 'Big Hero 6'. This was just so upbeat in a weird way that didn't feel patronizing like some feel good films have the ability to be. Honestly, probably my favorite Zach Braff thing ever, that's including scrubs (excluding season nine because who counts that really).
The performances of the whole cast really were just really well real. All of the main cast are just fantastic, especially Joey King. She's so young for someone so talented, this is definitely a different level to 'Romana and Beezus' which had been the only thing I had seen her in and I didn't really like her in that but this really shows off her talent and really proves that she can handle more serious roles that alot of actresses her age can't. But everyone is amazing, King just really stood out to me.
I can't particularly find a big enough fault in this film for me not to just fall in love. Probably my only thing is the soundtrack, just kidding it's also perfect. Literally can't think of a thing.

Rating: 5 stars, I honestly cannot think of anything bad about this film

Grand Budapest Hotel (2014, Anderson)

Having 9 Oscar nominations is no small victory for this hilarious and awfully symmetrical film created by the masterful Wes Anderson and it deserves every single one of those nominations making it tied with 'Birdman' for most Oscar Nominations this year!
Like all Anderson films his ensemble cast are pretty much all present in this gorgeously shot film, plus a few extra people in the mix which just add to the charm of this quirky comedy. I don't want to spoil anything about this film because it is definitely one of those films to go in blind because as always with Anderson you never know what to expect past Bill Murray, symmetry, a very singular colour scheme and one amazing soundtrack.
This film has quickly become one of my favorite Wes Anderson film by just somehow surpassing every one of his other films in cinematography. Grand Budapest Hotel is just a gift to your eyes from Anderson.
The film is very very funny and it's all star cast is never once a disappointment!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5, just so good but maybe not as good as Fantastic Mr Fox

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Stiller, 2013)

Honestly the most uplifting film I have seen as of probably my entire life so far. There isn't a sad moment, ok maybe one but the nice thing is it doesn't linger on it like alot of other more recent 'super uplifting' films.
The most striking thing about this film to me is truly the writing and the cinematography (the camera movements, style etc.) it was just so captivating. Firstly, writing. It is the writing that makes this film so funny and uplifting, it's not like there is constant jokes because the comedy is right there without the need for constant jokes. Of course there are some more obvious jokes, like when the new manager (Adam Scott) of 'LIFE' magazine starts to throw things at Walter (Ben Stiller) in order to see how far he is into his daydreams which makes you dislike the manager even more and gives you a chance for a bit of a giggle. Secondly, cinematography. Just so so so gorgeous! The camera movements were smooth, and simple but still so captivating and showed you everything you needed in that scene. Going to stop here before I go into waffling mode.
Overall, this film is really unexpected for a big budget Hollywood film directed by an actor (because sometimes that is not a good mix). It's kind of melancholy yet uplifting, and it's so funny without it being cheesy. I had a feeling I would really enjoy this film from the moment I first saw the trailer, I had no clue that I would love it as much as I do. I had it on repeat for like three days (it may have been more), and I am not sick of it one little bit.

Rating: 5/5, just brilliant from actors to story line to freakin' cinematography! Just amazing!

Fantastic Mr. Fox review (2009, Anderson)

I had my doubts about this stop motion masterpiece until I heard the soundtrack and instantly fell in love. After hearing the soundtrack I swiftly went and watched the film and it was like falling in love with the soundtrack all over again because it just fit into the film so insanely perfectly it was just perfection. 

In addition to the soundtrack the voice work of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman and many other amazing actors are just so on throughout the whole film. This may be down to the fact that Anderson got them to act it out as if it were a live action movie but whether it is that or not the film is just awesome.

The film is an adaptation of the children's novel of the same name written by Roald Dahl. It is about a fox family that act as human but still recognize that they are animals. So it's rather odd at times but just makes the film more lovable and enjoyable.

My rating for this is (very obviously) five out of five stars and I would and do recommend this film to anyone that lives and breaths. I cannot tell enough people to go and watch this film.
