What Have You Been Watching? (February, 2018)

Back to the blogging I go with an insanely late rundown of what I had been watching throughout the month of February. I didn't finish any TV programs, and I don't really have a good reason for that unfortunately. So, let's get on with it.

Films

• Phantom Thread - This was a very interesting film. It was so twisty and kinda twisted at the end. I enjoyed it but it definitely left me speechless, I needed to think about it for a while after I watched it. This film was certainly an interesting one, not for everyone but if you are into your more arty original films, then maybe give this one a go. 
• Black Panther - One of the best marvel films ever. It's black-ness was my favourite thing about it. I think it made an important stance politically by having a film like this, but not any film a blockbusting superhero film. This film was funny and I felt like it really gave you a window into a positively portrayed black society, because so often they aren't portrayed positively lets face it. I really enjoyed it, not my favourite marvel film but it was very good and is definitely up there.  
• The Mercy - The most depressing film on this list by far. I honestly don't have a lot to say about it past that. Rachel Weiss was amazing, very much in the same vein as Alicia Vikander in the Danish Girl. As in, they both play wives to the main character but steal the show with their amazing acting skills. Good film but majorly depressing. 
• Status Update - This was a throwback moment for me. My friend and I were both major Disney Channel kids and felt that this film had a major DCOM vibe to it. We were right and I think that my 14 year old self would've been all over it, although my 20 year old self still had a pretty good time watching it. It had its funny moments and was just a fun, silly film. 
• The Shape of Water - This film was my top running for Best Picture at the Oscars and I was right, mwahahaha another year in a row I was correct. It is simply the most beautiful film in terms of it's story and it's design/look. The main characters literally seem to cover every lesser shown category of person: a mute, a gay man, a black women, and a fish man (so maybe some scaley vibes there). It is a beautiful tale of forbidden love, that is tragic and broke my heart. 
• Lady Bird, x2 - I adored this film, I think it is such an insightful look into family life and specifically the relationship between a mother and daughter. It is so well written, it isn't just handed to you on a plate you really need to be an active watcher when watching this film or you won't get everything. Honestly, just go watch it. It is amazing.

Black Panther (Coogler, 2017)

  I was excited for this film, they could have so easily been like 'no, black panther doesn't need his own film' but they did it an I wanna give marvel a high five for creating this film.
Basic storyline time - Black Panther is about the African nation Wakanda and what could be of Africa had we left them alone to do their own thing. Damn colonialism, messing things up. The narrative revolves around the character of T'Challa the prince that becomes king of Wakanda after the death of his father. The main issue of the narrative is getting back their vibranium from Klaue, a black market smuggler whom is responsible for killing many Wakandan's when he stole the vibranium in the first

place.
  I enjoyed this film, I had a fun time watching it and I was never bored. However, it is very much like every other Marvel movie excluding very few. It is up there in my top Marvel films but it has certainly not knocked Thor: Ragnarok off of the top spot. Every aspect of this film is well done, from acting, casting, costume, music and so many more this film combines all its elements flawlessly. But it doesn't really do anything that different to other Marvel films in terms of the narrative.
  I think that the most important and best thing about this film is that it is an entirely black cast minus a few people with more than one line. I think it is so important that everyone in this world feels represented in mainstream media and let's face it black people don't get the representation that they should. So, on that aspect, I think that this movie was well done. Although, along the same lines I wish that they spoke Wakandan more. I understand why they didn't speak it all the time when they were in Wakanda because it would affect the sellability of the movie because some people (probably a majority) don't want to read subtitles for the entire movie. I think that there were some scenes though, that would have made more sense if they spoke to each other in Wakandan because sometimes they'll be talking but only one person will speak Wakandan the entire time whilst the others speak English and it was just a little weird and jarring.
  Overall, like I said earlier I enjoyed this film. I was never bored, it was fun, I'm looking forward to infinity war. It was serious but had a lot of fun moments. Politically this film is important especially at this moment in time where racism is seemingly still running rampant all over the western world. This film does have issues, it certainly isn't perfect nor is it the best Marvel film. However, if you want a fun film to watch that will keep you entertained for a couple of hours then this will do that for you, I'm sure.

What Have You Been Watching? (January, 2018)

Oh, how I love January so many amazing films come out in hopes of getting those coveted Oscar nominations. On the other hand, I haven't been doing amazing on the TV front with work, uni, and all the amazing films that have been released that I just must see!

FILM

• Hostiles - This film was gone so quickly I feel like I'm the only person I know that has actually seen it. I enjoyed it, I don't particularly want to go into the political stuff surrounding it because I simply don't feel like I know enough about the history and all that stuff. What I do know is that I liked it and it showed how cruel and judgemental the Cowboys were to the Natives in America. It is very much saying that the Cowboy's were the bad guys in the situation. It certainly doesn't say that the Natives were completely innocent but they aren't faceless evil like in many old westerns. Very good, I recommend watching it if you're sick of how westerns make the Natives look.
• Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri -  I really enjoyed this film and I think it is saying something important about rape cases and how they are dealt with. However, it is problematic AF! The 'hero' at the end is very much to be made out to be the racist backward cop and I'm not cool with that. It made me feel bad for thinking that it was a good film as his redemption felt unnecessary and out of place. I think, watch it and have your own opinion because it is a good film but it has its issues. 
• Brad's Status - I love a bit of Ben Stiller and was excited to go see this film. It's good, enjoyable and pretty funny but nothing special when considering the other things that are coming out at the moment. But it left me feeling very good about life and that I should take it as it comes and not be to put out by where I end up. 
• Coco - I loved this film, the animation is beautiful and the songs are catchy and heartwarming at times. It has its issues but overall I loved it. For more in-depth thoughts here's my review: http://galaxysearcher.blogspot.co.uk/2018/01/coco-unkrich-2018.html …
• The Darkest Hour - This is cinematically beautiful and Gary Oldman's performance is amazing, you truly forget that it is him under that fat suit and all the prosthetics. It made someone (me) who is not very proud of being British be very proud of being British which is an accomplishment in itself. I recommend it, probably not my favorite of the month but it is very good and is not surprisingly being nominated for awards all over the place. 
• The Post - I was kind of worried about this one, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in leading roles. Both of insanely good actors and I was worried their presence may fight it out a little but I was wrong. Meryl Streep leads this film with an iron fist as she shows how delicate a woman is but also how smart and brave women are. Her being one of the few women with any lines may
  have actually made this message even more clear. She was in a man's world but eventually let her voice be heard and show the men that she is braver than they ever thought she could be. A captivating performance from Streep, certainly the best thing about this film. 
• The Greatest Showman - This one I have mixed feelings about. On the one hand, I love the
  music and thoroughly enjoyed the film. However, on the other hand, the storyline was kind of confusing in terms of who I'm supposed to be rooting for and have sympathy for. It just felt like the writer didn't like P.T. Barnum (which makes sense), and really liked the romance between Zac Efron and Zendaya's characters romance because for a secondary plot line it had a massive focus that made me want a whole film about the two of them. It just left me feeling not great about P.T. Barnum because I was just like no, give me more of their romance it's more interesting than him most likely cheating on his wife. But it was still very fun and I have been listening to the soundtrack ever since I watched it. 

TV

• Our Love has always been 10 Centimetres Apart - This show was the cutest thing and it made me cry, is it obvious I'm overly romantic? It tells an alternate story to the anime film I've Always Loved You - Confess your Love Committee, it tells the story of a different couple out of the friendship group to the first edition of the story. It is adorable, and funny, and just super cute for lack of words to describe how much I just felt like a was watching a kawaii romance dream. This was also the only TV show I finished this month, sorry guys.

Oscar Anger

I love anime and I love animation. However, you may not know that I am quite into film awards such as the BAFTA's and the Oscar's. So, the nominees were announced today and I'm quite mad to put it lightly. For the second year in a row, an amazing anime film that was widely adored, and has won many animation awards has been snubbed for a nomination at the Oscars. Last year Makoto Shinkai's Your Name became the highest grossing anime film of all time, trumping Miyazaki's Spirited Away which had held the title since 2001 and is the only anime film to ever win the Oscar for best animated feature. And yet, it was completely snubbed, it landed no nominations by any academy. No Golden Globe nomination, no BAFTA nomination, and no Oscar nomination. It would seem as though no academy of film actually knows that there are other anime studios apart from Studio Ghibli that make feature-length animations, as only Studio Ghibli has ever been nominated by any of these companies.

  This year is no different it would seem, as another year has gone by and there is no nomination for A Silent Voice, Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale, Napping Princess, and Mary and the Witches Flower, which were all put in the pot for consideration among the 27 animated features in that pot. I personally am not a fan of Sword Art Online but one cannot ignore that it is a massive franchise in the anime world, that is popular worldwide. 

  Ok, so I'm clearly very annoyed about the fact that Japan is ignored by the academy and its friends. But, what really irks me is that the award is best animated feature, emphasis on ANIMATED. If we are looking at these films because they are animated then surely things like story and character etc. don't matter, and it's the animation that counts right? Which just angers me even more because Japan's animation is another world, and I'm sorry Pixar but out of the nominees Loving Vincent should win because it is outstanding in the world of animation. Even if A Silent Voice was nominated I think I would be rooting for that to win. Japan is one of the only nations to still almost entirely to animate in 2D, anime stands out because of its style alone, let alone everything else. Japan's animation is not just children's fare, yes Pokemon exists but largely it's aimed at more developed minds, so young adult onwards. It deals with themes outrightly that western animation doesn't really touch. A Silent Voice starts with the main character getting ready to commit suicide, it's heavy and touching. They play with these intense themes so delicately, with such care that it never seems out of place or not done well. To think that A Silent Voice and Coco could be in the same category is insane when thinking about the story, but in terms of animation they can fight to the death and it would be
pretty damn close because they are both beautiful in their own way. 

  Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I'm disappointed that three major awards seem to ignore the amazing animation that Japan puts out into the world unless it's Studio Ghibli. And to be honest, even then it's only really Studio Ghibli created by Miyazaki and Takahata, the founders of the studio. Anime has a worldwide reach and yet is ignored, to me that just doesn't seem right.

Coco (Unkrich, 2018)

  I have waited the longest freakin' time for this film and let me tell you I was not dissapointed even though I had built it up for such a long time in my head. It's giving me hope that the Incredibles 2 is going to blow my mind. Ok, so unfortunately I live in England and along with the political turmoil that we seem to constanly find ourselves in we get Disney and Pixar films at least a month after America does. Coco was released in the US on Thanksgiving weekend, the UK doesn't get it until next week but luckily for me we had previews on the weekend just gone. Which made me very happy. Ok, so backstory over with time for the review.
  Coco tells the story of a boy called Miguel who loved music more than anything. However, his family hates music more than anything because of some family issues that happened generations before Miguel was born. After a fight with his family over music and Miguel wanting to pursue it as a career, he runs away and after some antics finds himself in the land of the dead. Whilst in the land of the dead he wants to find his great great grandfather, and so the real adventure begins. He makes new friends and makes some discoveries that will change his family for the better.
  Firstly, this film is so beautiful. The animation on this is just amazing. Throughout the entire film the screen is just lit up by the brightly coloured lights that cover the world of the dead. In addition to this, the petals have this gorgeous glow to them that again just lights up the screen. The spirit guides also glow, and its beutiful. This film is just a treat for your eyes. If you aren't going to see it for any other reason, you should see it just to look at it like a piece of art becuase it is.
  Next up, the voice acting by the entire cast is superb and the songs are well done in both writing and singing. The cast was so perfectly matched with the characters and really added to the film as a whole. The story was heartbreaking, and touching, and not to kiddy for a 'kids film', not that I expected it to be. There is an overarching message of be nice to your family because they only want good things for you which is a bit, I dont know the right word but it was just a bit overdone maybe? Like it just kept coming up and I got a bit bored of them constantly saying it.
I have few complaints about this film. The constant repitition of be nice to your family got a bit boring and annoying and as much as I enjoyed the songs the amount of singing in it made it feel a bit too Disney for a PIXAR film for me. But it was still enjoyable, make that point clear, they arent bad songs, it just feels wierd in a PIXAR film.
  Honestly, this film is so cute and heartwarming. It made me cry twice, damn PIXAR. It is beautifully animated, the casting is very well done and the songs are really great. It also is making a very clear stance againt POTUS's anti-mexican ideas which is great. My only issue is that it feels very Disney for PIXAR, that's it. Other than that this film is very good and I will happily go and see it again when it is officially out in the UK.

Yearly Round Up: Favourite Films of 2017

I watched a lot of new releases this year, it's been pretty good and the release line up for January looks like its going to be insane in 2018 from the very beginning. This isn't going to be a post just listing all of the films I watched in 2017 but it shall be a post talking about my favourite of the new releases of the year, as I want my first post of 2018 to be a positive one! Ok, let's get on with me picking my favourites out of the 22 new releases I watched this year (there is probably more that I watched on Netflix, amazon etc. but that's the number of cinema tickets I still have from the beginning of the year).

My first favourite of the year Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry. I thoroughly enjoyed the second film in this long running anime series. I managed to finish the series literally the day I went to see the film and it was so perfect as a place holder to keep the fans going until the release of the final season this year (wow, that feels weird to say). I really enjoy Fairy Tail as an anime series although I get why it wouldn't be to everyones taste but I love the characters and any extra time I get with them is time well spent to me. If you enjoyed the series and haven't seen the film yet, it is very good (better than the Phoenix Priestess in my opinion) and really adds to the series story as a whole. Much needed info for the non-manga readers is given here.
Next up is Blade Runner 2049. Let's face it, this film is pure cinematic beauty. After watching it again since my first watch I can confirm that I do prefer it to the original (please don't kill me). It's just so beautiful and the music is so perfect. The performances are so good and I really liked the story and how twisty the ending was. It surprised me, who's been a fan of the original for a years and my boyfriend who hadn't seen the first one before watching 2049 understood and really enjoyed it too.
Thor: Ragnarok is by far my favourite Marvel to date (sorry Joss). It is so stylised and fun to watch. It really calls back to how superheroes used to be when they were silly and graphic. I was getting bored of the doom and gloom of Marvel and had no interest in the doom and gloom of DC. I had no interest in seeing this film when it first came out but the more I saw of it the more I knew it would knock the first guardians off the top spot of (Disney distributed) Marvel films for me. It was beautiful past Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, cinematically stunning and the script was so well done.
Battle of the Sexes was one I was looking forward to for the longest time. Every time I walked down the corridor at the cinema I saw that poster and said/thought 'I really need to see that when it comes out' and I did. I saw it pretty soon after the release and I thought it was really good. I didn't think that it made the lesbian relationship overly sexualised which I was scared that it would, it was actually very romantic in a really tragic way where you weren't sure whether you wanted it to work out or not. It is very much focused on Billie Jean King, her match, her career and how much of a powerful women she is. It is very empowering for female viewers, it made me feel like I really have power and can be the change I want to see in the world. Such an awe inspiring story that will pump you up.
Almost at the end now, second to last is The Disaster Artist. I know that he probably won't, but I really want James Franco to get at least one nomination for his performance in this film. His performance was absolutely insane it made the film. This film was hilarious, more so that it was all true in its insanity. The performances past James Franco were amazing, which is certainly proved by the comparison to the room whilst the credits are rolling. This film deserves so much recognition, people need to see it. If you haven't seen the room I don't think it matters all to much because you'll sit there thinking its ridiculous and then all the facts about The Room during the credits will make you spit out that Tango Ice Blast, turn to the person next to you and say "that actually happened? This film exists?", or just google it if you're on your own, you'll probably still spit out your drink though.
Finally, who could see this coming a mile away. My final favourite new release in terms of films I saw at the cinema was............. Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This was an insanely obvious one, I came out of the midnight screening and I loved it. Then when I thought about it I wasn't sure if I got lost in the haze of excitement that comes along with a packed midnight screening. I have now seen it for a second time and I can confirm that it is a bit of a mess. It's different to the others yet has its references and similarities. I think it has put this new trilogy in a good direction for the next instalment. I hate Porgs so very much, they aren't as annoying as Minions but they are pretty damn close to the level annoyance their presence causes in me. It makes me sad that Chewy is in CG and not a guy in a fur suit but I love the evil BB-8 and my love for the rebel BB-8 has just grown even more (he is the cutest droid, sorry R2). If you like Star Wars go see it, if you don't skip it. Simple as that, it's definitely for the fans not so much for the causal sci-fi goers.

These are my top picks from the year that I have seen at this point in time. There are many films coming out in the UK in January that I plan on seeing. Fairy Tail Consideration

  It's the most wonderful time of the yearrrrrr! It is Star Wars time once again and I was so freakin' hyped! I booked my tickets months ago and I saw it at midnight because I love being one of the first people to see something! I loved it....I think? Ok, so this week I was going to write a review about how much I loved Star Wars: The Last Jedi but I think it may need to wait a couple of weeks until I watch it again when I go home for the holidays. I really just don't know how I feel about it. I honestly loved it but I'm confused. So, keep an eye out for a review of star wars in the next couple of weeks. So this week, instead of what I had planned, I am going to talk about an anime called Fairy Tail
because not enough people talk about it. Ok, let's go!

  Fairy Tail was originally a manga series that has been adapted into an anime series in recent years. It spans over around 400 episodes and two films, with an upcoming final season to come out at some point next year. So, it is very long and shall take you a long time to watch it, you definitely need some time on your hands otherwise it will take you like a year to finish it. (it took me three months to finish it, pretty much exclusively watching only Fairy Tail). It is set in a world of magic and adventure, where a magic guild called Fairy Tail wreak havoc but in a good way, they're trying to help people. They story centres around the characters of Lucy Heartfilia, Natsu Dragneel, Erza Scartlett, and Gray Fullbuster, oh and Happy too, at the beginning and as the show goes on you get to learn more about the other members of the guild and their stories too. Throughout the show the team go on adventures to mysterious lands and meet new guilds along the way, some friend and some foe, to be honest more often than not they're the later. They advance their powers and as an audience we become closer to these characters as we follow them around and learn more about them. Long story, short: epic adventure fantasy anime with cute boys and girls, do you need more info than that to want to watch it really?
  I know that it is pretty daunting when you find an anime series that looks awesome but then you find out that it has hundreds of episodes. That is exactly how I felt when I first came across Fairy Tail, my heart sank as I honestly thought that maybe I should just skip it, I will never catch up with all the people that have been watching for years. However, I'm so glad that I ignored that feeling and went ahead with watching this series. The characters are the sweetest and so likeable, the friendships are adorable, the fight scenes are intense, the animation in general is great. The character development is insane, from the main characters to the other members of the guild you get to learn so much and really feel like you know them. The story arcs are fun but also can be serious and tense at times when that is exactly what you feel the show needs to do. Honestly, I can't say that I didn't get to a point where I didn't want to watch it anymore, although I firmly believe that I am at fault for that. Don't try and binge it without having a break from it, you will get slightly sick of it, as you would with any show after 200 episodes of non-stop watching solely that alone. What I'm trying to say in this waffley post is that Fairy Tail, even with its daunting number of episodes, is worth giving a go and trying to watch. It is probably within my top five, and definitely within my top ten anime of all time out of 43. If you like epic adventures and true friend(ships) then this is an anime worth giving a go.

The Man Who Invented Christmas (Nalluri, 2017)

I don't think I have ever come out of the cinema in early December feeling so Christmassy as I did coming out of The Man Who Invented Christmas. I'm quite the sucker for Christmas films. I can say that I'm not the biggest fan of Christmas as much as I like all year but when it comes to December I do start to feel the Christmas vibes (especially as I got a vegan advent calendar this year). My friend suggested this film and I honestly love Christmas films so was totally up for it, plus Dan Stevens is always a bonus. However, I didn't think that I would enjoy this rendition of 'A Christmas Carol' as
much as I did. For a long long time my favourite edition of Charles Dickens' novel 'A Christmas Carol' has been the Muppets version. I can't help it, I love the muppets and Christmas films and when you smoosh them both together I can help but let it settle into place in my top Christmas movies of all time. This rendition of that many-a-time told story is so unique and new, and honestly just so captivating.
Basically, to tell you a little bit about the film, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) has had quite a few flops after the hit of 'Oliver Twist' and is struggling to come up with a new story to tell. He needs money quite badly and comes up with the idea to write a Christmas book. Dickens is laughed out of the proposal meeting with his publishers as this has never been done before and Christmas had become a minor holiday on peoples calendars. Nevertheless, Dickens believes in his idea and decides he shall pay for everything himself and get it printed in time for Christmas (which is a mere two months away). He struggles with his characters and the story in general but obviously manages to write the book that has become a household title.
It's so interesting to watch a different angle on this story. I have never really done any research or know anything really about Charles Dickens but it was so intriguing finding out all the backstory behind this classic book. The audience get to find out what he struggled with and see where he got the names for his characters and phrases such as 'bah, humbug'. I honestly never realised how much Charles Dickens changed the face of Christmas. I'm sure the royal family being German had a little to do with it, but references are made to this particular book of Dickens' since it was first written. There are countless references made in TV and film, even in Fashion (I'm talking Christmas apparel here). Even if someone isn't into something (although especially Christmas) they will surely be called Scrooge.
Overall, I really loved this film. I loved the insight into how Dickens wrote his book and created Characters. How he had a crappy childhood and how that effected how he wrote and what he wrote about. The performances by the entire cast are mesmerising, you really just get lost in the story and forget who they are in reality. It also left me with a heart filled with Christmas cheer, which I'm sure was Charles Dickens' aim with the book (I doubt he could even imagine film in general let alone a film about him writing that book doing it). It's honestly just such a warming movie and the perfect thing to watch this Christmas, and perhaps next year too.

What Are You Watching? (November 2017)

Another month, another list of all the crap I have been watching over the course of a month. It's getting colder and I want to be inside even more than usual just watching film and TV.

TV

• Anohana (The Flower We Saw That Day) - Finally finished an anime series. Took a break from one piece and felt like a needed a good fantasy/sci-fi romance anime to make my heart burst. This is an insanely beautiful anime that I'm sure fans of Your Name will love to absolute pieces. 
• One Punch Man - This is such a fun show to watch. My boyfriend and I were looking for something to watch and I've been meaning to watch it for a while so I suggested this as neither of us had seen it. It's so good and we can't wait until the next season comes out next year.

FILM

• Thor: Ragnarok - I have written a review on the masterpiece that Marvel somehow managed to create after spitting out somewhat sub-par superior movies. Basically you should go watch it, but first read my review to know what you're in store for. Full review here: 
• Murder on the Orient Express - I honestly really enjoyed this film, it's quite nice to have such a big film want you to be thinking as your watching it rather than simply switching off. • Battle of the Sexes - This is a good one. It is thought provoking and heart capturing. A review may go up at some point but I want to see it again before I write it so I can really get my thoughts about it straight. So, look out for that in the next couple of weeks.

For the love of cartoons

It is not a secret that I adore animation with the amount I post about Disney and anime. It doubt it comes as a surprise for anyone that regularly checks out my blog but I love cartoons. Cartoon Network is the bomb for finding some good American cartoons that you will fall in love with no matter what your age.

  As a kid, I grew up watching cartoons. I'm not talking about Disney and PIXAR films, I am talking about Spongebob, powerpuff girls, dexter's lab and just about every other cartoon nickelodeon, The Simpsons and Futurama, eventually moved on to Family Guy but I never enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed cartoons as a kid or even when I rewatch them now. In response to this I headed back to the land of cartoons that is cartoon network to get my fix. That is when I discovered Adventure Time, quite possibly the best new cartoon I have ever watched and never want to end (even though I know it is on its final season).
boomerang and cartoon network had to offer me. Then as I grew 'out of' those cartoons, or so I was expected to do, I was looking for something new to watch. I watched

  When I started to watch Adventure Time I got that love for cartoons back that I had wanted back for such a long time. This show alone kind of kept my cartoon needs at bay for a while but when I heard it was finishing with this season my heart broke. What was I going to watch now? What am I going to Steven Universe. This show is like no other. It's weird and magical, it's beautifully animated and I adore every single one of the characters. It has filled the animated whole in my heart that the news of Adventure time had left behind. I can never wait for new episodes much like I was (and still am until it ends) with Adventure Time. An honourable mention goes out to The Regular Show because that show is awesome and I love it. It's a good one to just pick a random episode and laugh for ten minutes straight.
watch now when I can't be bothered to read subtitles? That is when I remembered that I had heard something about a new show on cartoon network that was amazing, and that show was

These two shows combined with anime fill me with so much happiness when I watch them. I adore these three shows so much and can honestly tell anyone my age and above that have become bored with 'adult' cartoons (not talking about hentai) to watch these shows. Yeah, they're 'kids' shows but I regularly question whether they really are or not. Yes, they are on a kids network and a kid could easily watch it and enjoy it but there is another level of enjoyment when you watch it as an adult.
Much like with Disney films there are innuendos, secret swearing and many more things that will have you giggling when your niece or nephew is not (they will ask you why, be prepared for that). Basically, what I'm trying to say here is that if you liked cartoons as a kid and miss them, why not give the current kids cartoons a go. They're pretty strong.

Murder on the Orient Express (Branagh, 2017)

Gotta love working at a cinema, get to see a lot of new films. This week on Bethany's constant reviews because she works at a cinema now is Murder on the Orient Express directed by Kenneth Branagh (of course, who else would do it). Going into this film I was pretty excited, all star cast, great director, the book has been adored for years and years, and who doesn't love a game of cluedo on a train?

Basically, the story is centred around the detective Hercule Poirot who ends up going on the orient express thanks to a friend who just so happens to be the director of the train. On this train he meets a bunch of strangers played by stars such as Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer and many more. At first everything is fine until one of them is murdered, everyone is a suspect in this suspenseful murder mystery.
Many are saying that the cinematography and sets are outshining the cast, which I understand but with so many stars it's hard for any one actor to shine. Of course Kenneth Branagh shines the most out of everyone but that is because he is the centre of the film's narrative without him the narrative wouldn't happen. He is also very funny as Poirot, that moustache and that laugh just made me laugh whilst watching the film. The cinematography and sets are very stunning throughout the entire film, they are simply mesmerising. Of course it doesn't have it's faults but as a first effort in a different genre for Branagh I think he did really well at this adaptation as it is so different from the vibe of a Shakespeare adaptation.
Overall, the film is amusing and keeps you on your toes as to who is the murderer. It is tense and interesting. The acting is great and the sets are insane. Kenneth Branagh shines as the director of this Agatha Christie adaptation and I hope that there are many more adaptations to come from Branagh. I really enjoyed the film and would highly recommend the film to anyone that enjoys a good murder mystery or crime thriller.

Thor Ragnarok (Waititi, 2017)

  Sorry for being missing a couple of weeks guys, essays can leave you a little burnt out for a bit. But I am back with a review of Thor: Ragnarok arguably the best Marvel (Disney distributed) film to come out since Guardians of the Galaxy, and definitely my new favourite Marvel (Disney distributed) film because no super hero film is going to beat Deadpool for me. Ok, let's get started.
  Synopsis time. Thor has been out of Asgard for a while now but he returns to find out that Loki is alive (This is not a spoiler as it is the trailers) and has thrown their Father onto Earth so that he can rule in Odin's place. When they find their father, they are told of the Goddess of Death and her
relation to them. As the two are about to return to Asgard and the Goddess of Death turns up and follows them to Asgard. Although, not without pushing the both of them out of the tunnel to Asgard on the way there. Thor ends up in a land of scavengers and trash, meets an old friend and makes a new one. They team up and try to go up against the Goddess of death, and I shall leave it there.
  My biggest issue with this film, isn't actually with the film at all but with the trailers which have been everywhere as much as I have tried to avoid them. They tell anyone watching it the two biggest reveals of the whole film, that Loki isn't dead and that the Hulk is also in this land of trash and scavengers. These would have been awesome surprises for the audience of the film, as Loki had 'died' in the last Thor film and the Hulk had been missing since Avengers: Age of Ultron. I just think that they should have either revealed neither of them or only one because audiences would have been so thrilled that these characters where back, especially if they had been kept in the dark about who Thor's team in the film would be.
  Ok, enough moaning about trailers. I know I should just plug up my hears, cover my eyes and hum real loud until they're over. Now onto why this is the best Marvel film of all time! It is visually stunning, the comedy is on point and just elevates the darker moments, and Chris Hemsworth is a beautiful human that is very nice to stare at for two hours. Seriously though, visually, outside of Chris Hemsworth, this film is absolutely stunning. The green screen stuff was really well done (unlike another Marvel film that I won't mention), and I'm actually disappointed that I didn't see it in IMAX 3D and I really don't care about 3D. Even though it was absolutely stunning visually, it didn't take away from the script which was on point from the very first line. It is a very funny film and actually like a comic book. It's very graphic and colourful but the script is snappy and witty. You won't be bored for even a moment because there is always something to keep you entertained. Plus, you can just stare at Thor and Loki and you'll have a good time no matter how bad you think it is.
  Overall, this is definitely a change of pace to the dark narratives that Marvel have been doing in the Avengers narratives. In addition to this, because the film was not set on earth, apart from a few minutes here and there, they got to really shine with their use of CGI to create a masterpiece. This is the second film this year that I have found simply stunning to watch and this one is much more accessible to the masses than Blade Runner 2049 is.

What Are You Watching (October, 2017)

Another month, another massive watchlist because it is autumn now and I don't want to go outside if it's raining and or windy. So, I have watched a lot of stuff. Let's go!

TV

• My Hero Academia - It's over, which makes me insanely sad. I started watching this series just before the second series started to air during the spring simulcast releases anime-wise. I'm kind of with all the people that are saying this will be replacing one of the Shonen Jump anime series' that have finished in the past year. It gained popularity almost instantly and is already guaranteed to have a third season so hopefully it won't be too long till Deku is back on my screen. 
• Steven Universe - I have watched all the episodes I can for now so I figured I would put it in this post because I'll be watching them as soon as I can from now on. I fell for the series pretty fast, the idea is so original and fun. The animation is superb, I especially love the background design of the show. I love the relationships that the Gems have with Steven, especially Garnet. So cute. I can't wait for episodes to come out, I'm so excited!

Film

• The Place Promised in Our Early Days - I'm just going to put it out there, Makoto Shinkai is a master of anime and storytelling. He is an amazing writer and his animation is just outstanding. I haven't watched everything, but everything I have seen is just out of this world. In terms of Japanese animation easily playing with the big boy that is Studio Ghibli and in terms of world wide can definitely compete with the Disney Giant and Pixar if he wanted to. A review for this one is here if you want to take a gander: 
• American Assassin - It's ok. I can see why it is failing past the fact that it was released in between It and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It's just your average action film, it doesn't really try to do anything that the genre hasn't been doing for years ahead of this film. The acting is good but nothing special. If you want a super easy watch then go for it otherwise I'd maybe skip it. 
• Blade Runner 2049 - Do I think it's better than the original. I've been thinking about this particular question since I've seen it and after a lot of deliberation I think that I do. It's just visually stunning and the sound design is so intense and well done. It doesn't reiterate things enough to annoy people that have seen the original but they do mention it and explain it enough that new viewers won't become confused. • The Lego Ninjago Movie - This is a super fun film, even if I do feel as though they're putting less effort in in terms of animation. The script is seriously shining in this one and made me giggle quite a few times. I also loved Dave Franco as a voice actor playing an angsty teen.  
• Kingsman: The Golden Circle - This movie was truly awful. It appeals to the masses, there were a lot of people laughing like a backing track to a sitcom but me and boyfriend regularly just stared at each other with looks of 'What on earth are we watching?'. We almost left before the film even ended it was so bad. I really don't recommend this, maybe unless you didn't like the humour in the first one because that smart, snarky, British humour is all gone. 
• The Death of Stalin - It's pretty good, more people should have gone to see it than what did. It is very much a flashback to A-Level history for me but very fun nonetheless. I recommend watching this when it comes out on DVD or pops up on the movie channels, you'll be in for a laugh and a bit of a history lesson (in the best way).

Blade Runner 2049 (Villeneuve, 2017)

  For starters I want to say that I have seen the original in a few of its many forms, and I have really loved it for a while. But oh my gosh this film, the sequel set 30 years after the event of the original film is amazing. Ok, brief synopsis time. As I said previously Blade Runner 2049 is set 30 years after the events of the original film and centres around Blade Runner officer K (Ryan Gosling). It's very much still the world of the original film as K retires replicants from the original batches that were being sent out into the world in the first film. However, the first replicant K 'retires' sets the narrative in motion as it reveals the secrets of the original film.

  This film is an absolute beauty for starters. You should all go see it if you haven't already just to look at the stunning visuals that this film has to offer. For the most part, Star Wars perhaps being the only reboot I'm ok with, I dislike the very idea of reboots and when I heard this was a thing I was somewhat intrigued but also disappointed that they couldn't leave Blade Runner alone. However, I was wrong to have set this way. Blade Runner 2049 is an amazing continuation of the original narrative and does justice to its predecessor but in addition to this it easily stand on its own two feet as a magnificent sci-fi film in its own right. I am conflicted to say the least as to whether I think this is better than the original, I've been thinking about it for over a week and the more I think about it the more I think that I do prefer this one to the original (and I cannot believe I just admitted it). Visually it is just stunning, and I think that is an understatement but I can't think of another word. The music and sound design creates the perfect atmosphere throughout the film and makes the film have an even bigger impact on the viewer. The performances of everyone in the cast are superb especially Ana de Armas, who's character evolves so much and you really get attached to her because of this. I don't think that I can actually explain everything that I love and appreciate about this film through words because I have none.
  Overall, you should go and watch this film because it is an amazing sequel but not only that as it is also an amazing sci-fi film in its own right. It doesn't matter if you have seen the first one or not because they do explain it enough that you won't be confused, but to anyone reading that has seen the original film you do not need to worry either as it isn't explained over and over and make annoyingly clear to those who already know the past narrative. This film is honestly a piece of art and the best reboot to have come out of Hollywood in the last few years!

The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004, Shinkai)

  Review Time! I know I said that this week would be a review but I literally just watched this film and it is perfection in an earthly form so I have decided to push my Disney Favourites instalment back a week so that I can convince you twitch this film because you should!
  In a world where Japan has been separated into two halves by Russia and the US three teenagers want to find out what is going on a tower on the Russian side of the country. As the film progresses time jumps occur (as with every Shinkai film), as the teens plans progress. After a three year jump it is revealed that they haven't seen each other in that time and one of them has seemingly just vanished into thin air.
  The Place Promised in Our Early Days is a sci-fi film with a very strong romance theme running all the way through it (as with every Shinkai film). It isn't your run of the mill science fiction with a hint
of romance. At its core the film is about relationships and how time and distance has an impact on those relationships that mean the world to you one minute and haunt you the next. Shinkai explores this theme in all of his films, he seems to have a deep interest in how relationships dwindle through time and how distance can put a strain on relationships that were previously so strong.
  The animation in this film is much like Shinkai's short film Voices of a Distant Star. It has the same character design which is very much his style unlike the recently released Your Name which is the only one to seemingly have lost this look. The background and settings that Shinkai animates are truly where he shines in an animation perspective, they are simply stunning. They are brightly coloured but not out there or strange. He animates lens flares into these scenes which gives the animation this essence of realness in a world that is so different from our own yet so strangely familiar.
  From style to story this film is breathtaking. The animation will have you wishing that everything was still 2D animated (which to be honest I already do) and the story will pull on your heartstrings just enough to get a few tears out of you. Even if you don't like anime films, or reading subtitles, find a dubbed version because even though this film is set in Japan I think it has the capability to connect with everyone no matter where they are from. The theme of relationships is one that everyone can relate to, and the theme of war and nations fighting for things that aren't truly theres is something so relevant in this day and age that it can't help but resonate with an audience today.

What Are You Watching? (September, 2017)

Sorry for missing last month, fully blame DisneyLife for that one but this month I am back and have been watching a lot of stuff.

TV

• Red Oaks (season 2) - A fun second season to accompany the first season. It's a series set in the mid 80's summertime in New Jersey. It follows the character of David Myers, played by Craig Roberts, as he (in this season) figures out what he wants to do with his future after dropping out of NYU. A good, easy watch with relatable characters that are fun and lovable. Obviously watch the first season before you watch this one, it is available on Amazon Prime video (it's an amazon original).
• Game of thrones (season 7) - Along with most of the world I watch Game of Thrones and of course watched the most recent season. Although I am not without my complaints for this most recent season I still enjoyed watching it and will definitely be tuning in to the final season of the show. 
• Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun - A very funny anime with lots of chibi scenes about a 'clean freak' who is very talented at soccer. It's quite simple but very enjoyable and just super fun to watch. It's kind of like a jokey version of sports animes, it has the seriousness about Soccer being life but cleanliness tops that in every episode and even in the matches. I would highly recommend this anime if you want an anime that is super easy to watch and you want a good laugh. 
• Love and Lies - An adorable little anime about true love and forbidden love in a world where your marriage is chosen for you. Honestly, it's just so cute!

FILM

• Mother! - I wasn't very interested in seeing this film after seeing the trailer, but my boyfriend was interested after reading a review so we went to go see it. Mother! (Aronofsky, 2017)

This may be one of the only positive or just not completely negative review of Mother! out in the world right now but let's get on it with anyway. I have quite a few thoughts about this film, it's definitely an interesting one. It's a captivating thriller that tries to send a message about humanity, mother nature, and god. The only thing is that that is all it does, it doesn't hide this within another story like most films that are trying to say something similar, the message is the story and the story is the message.
  A newly(?) wed couple are alone yet seemingly happy in a much to large home (earth) for just the two of them. The house had been in a fire but is being renovated by Jennifer Lawrence's character (Mother Earth). She seems happy enough with it just being the two of them but Javier Bardem's character (god) does not feel the same way as he continues to invite people/strangers into their home much to the dismay of his new wife. This inviting people in quality gets out of hand and drives J Law insane. Eventually, it gets to the point where the people he has invited in start to destroy the home she has worked so hard on and it just keeps going downhill for J Law from there really.
 The worst thing about this film is that it's message is very there, they don't try to hide it in any way within another story like most other psychological thrillers specifically, but even just most films that have a message about society in some way. It's not badly done, the message is quite clear from about half way through the film. The ending definitely makes what it is trying to say abundantly clear if you didn't quite get it earlier on in the film.
  The acting isn't bad, and the story isn't bad. It's kind of like something is just a little bit off with the whole film. It's not bad, but it isn't good either. Ok, no that isn't right. I personally thought that it wasn't as bad I thought it would be and that it was quite good (although I do question whether I think it's good just because I don't think it's as bad as reviews made it out to be). It isn't an easy watch at all, and it certainly isn't enjoyable in the way that the last few films I have watched are. I personally enjoyed it because it is putting out a message that I thoroughly believe in and I like that a film is putting it in peoples faces and attempting to make it clear without hiding the message within something else. But past that I didn't enjoy it.
  One could argue that this film is trying to be arty and express something loudly and make people think and question it and themselves. After reading many reviews I don't think Mother! accomplished that very well at all to be quite honest. Overall, I don't think that I can give this film a fully positive review because I don't feel positively about it. It kind of is a fail at trying to say something since a lot of people didn't get it at first (or so it seems), the acting is bad but it isn't great. The story is interesting but has its issues. Basically, if you're intrigued go and see it as it probably won't be around for that much longer but if not then I wouldn't bother.

Logan Lucky (Soderbergh, 2017)

  Another review coming your way any minute. Trying to up my film watching game before uni starts up again. This week I have watched one new film so that is what I shall be reviewing today even though I'm sure no one wants to read a review about anything at the moment apart from IT I'm going to go ahead and write this one anyway.
  This film is about two brothers whom believe, or at least one of them does, that their family is
cursed with bad luck because something bad has happened to basically every member of their family at least once including themselves. One of the two brothers, played by Channing Tatum, puts forward a plan to rob a vault at the Charlotteville motor speedway in order to get a lawyer so that he can fight for his right to see his daughter whom may move away soon. The other brother, played by Adam Driver, doesn't like the sound of this but goes along with it anyway because their family and he trusts his brother. As the story develops, so does their team and their plan. The Logan's curse does seem to crop up on occasion but it doesn't stop them from going through with the plan.
  Overall, I really enjoyed this film. Out of this and The Dark Tower I would definitely watch this one again out of the two. It's funny when it tries to be funny and has a well thought out twist that I honestly didn't see coming. The acting by everyone is well done. The stand out performance would be from Daniel Craig whom honestly if you did not know who he was you would think he was southern American and not English at all. There's no essence of Bond about him in this film. As well as Adam Driver whom you'd never think is also Kylo Ren in the newest Star Wars trilogy. This film really proves how talented these guys are, and how they can perform whatever character you ask for. It's a rather lighthearted comedy that has some stand out moments indeed but I'm not sure how above average it truly is. Logan Lucky probably won't be a film that I would run out to buy on DVD because I need it in my collection but if I spy it on Netflix or Amazon Prime in a few months time I will definitely be giving it another watch if I'm in for an easy comedy that I know will make me laugh. I don't really have anything picky to say about the film overall, just that there are better films out there. However, being serious now thank goodness for an original film that truly is very good, although missing something that I can't put my finger on. It just needed like an extra sprinkling of something to make it really outstanding. Although saying that it is unique and I don't think I've ever seen a film quite like it, very enjoyable indeed.

Rating: 4 out of 5. It's just missing something to push it into outstanding but definitely worth a watch or two.

The Dark Tower (2017, Arcel)

  I've been wanting to catch this film for a while now, and as it is probably leaving the cinema soon I thought I better see it sooner rather than later. I was kinda disappointed to be honest, it just wasn't what I expected it to be from the trailers I've seen. I was expecting fantastical thriller and got Percy Jackson.
  The film is about a young boy that is having dreams about an alternative reality where a tower that holds the darkness of the universe at bay is trying to be destroyed. His family think that the dreams and how shaken he is by them is mental strain from losing his father at some point before the timeline  of the film. He soon realises that his dreams are not just that, as he finds his dreams becoming reality.
  I was disappointed by this film, not because it's a bad film but just because it wasn't what I thought it would be through having watched the trailers. It's much more kid orientated than I thought it would be. The story is interesting and so are the characters. There are moments when it is a little more intense but nothing major. The trailer is more intense than any of the film is. Idris Elba is always good so can't really go wrong with casting him, and same with Mathew McConaughey. Tom Taylor plays the main character of Jake Chambers, he is kind of over shined by Elba and McConaughey though.
  Overall, I don't have an awful lot to say about this film after I was disappointed but it's not a bad film. Honestly, for kids and teens I think that this would be really enjoyable much like the Percy Jackson film series is. However, the trailers are really misleading as to who the audience for the film is supposed to be, which ultimately lead to my disappointment.
